Reactions to flea product chemicals
Subject: question: can a dog have a reaction to Frontline or a flea product
Is it possible my dog has had an allergic reaction to Frontline. I suspect that the reaction has been going on for at least 6 months. When i put on Frontline the dog starts scratching and itching and biting itself.
Response: can a dog have a reaction to Frontline or a flea product
There have been some cases of animals having suspected reactions to flea and heartworm medications. Often a Frontline reaction will consist of a localised patch of irritated skin and some hairloss, though it could be more generalised as the active ingredient does spread through the oils in the coat. We once had a dog that we suspected of having quite a severe reaction to sentinel (which has the same active ingredient as interceptor) it occured on two occasions, both a couple of days after dosing.
Look for a patch of badly affected skin where you applied the Frontline as one would expect any reaction to be worse where the product was more concentrated. Food allergies can also be responsible and there certainly could be an ingredient in the interceptor that sets it off. A true allergy only needs the smallest trace to be triggered. Possibly more likely if you are using the 'flavour tabs' variety. It is important to observe objectively. Were there any other changes around that time? Some things to think about are shampoos, household cleaning agents, garden plants or diet ( including treats ).
Did s/he visit somewhere he doesn't usually go? Are you using a special diet? It certainly could be worthwhile switching to Advantage for the flea control and give the dosing at different times to the Inteceptor tablet. See if there is an improvement. Ask your vet about anti histamines, they can help lessen any itching without the side-effects of cortisone.
